Why I want to study Fashion Design

Coco Chanel once said "In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different" and it is by no means do aim to be replaceable. The thing I love most about Fashion Design is the ability to be as individual and create as you like, and yes sometimes it is easy to get carried away with too much detail to a design but I don’t think that it’s right to be penalised for having the courage to exaggerate. The reason I want to study Fashion Design is simply because I enjoy it, I love it. When thinking of the future I cannot imagine myself in any other industry, I belong in Fashion. I suppose my early inspiration came from my mother, growing up she was a very fashion forward woman, always keeping up with latest trends in Vogue magazine, always experimenting with different colours, mix and matching. From the work that I have submitted, I think it does show a wide variety of what I am capable of doing. The thing that is most important to me about my work is that i enjoy it; I enjoy creating every single piece that I do, especially the Fashion side of my work. When set a task I am a perfectionist and I do not mind spending hours outside of the classroom finishing off work that I’ve been set, in fact I enjoy it and I think that is the main reason why I know that Fashion Design is what I want to do.  I hope you will give me the opportunity to prove that I can do this, and there is a niche in the market for a new designer.

Finished Outfit, Back View

This is a photograph of one of the pieces from my A2 Textiles collection. This is the back of the outfit, the outfit consists of a skirt and a blouse. I decided to show the back of this outfit because I particularly like the detail of the little black buttons, which I covered myself, all the way down the back of the blouse and the shape of the train. The train is made completely out of red velvet ruffles, I liked the way that the ruffled got smaller towards the middle of the train and flared out again towards the bottom.

Fashion Drawings

These are two fashion drawings I drew for my A2 Textiles collection. My theme was History with a Punk - Rock edge and my colour palette was red, black and off-white. I wanted consistency throughout my pieces so in every piece for this collection I had red velvet ruffles to link all the pieces together, for these two particular outfits, I had red velvet ruffle trains.

Urban Architecture, Fashion Show

This is an image of the dress I created for a fashion show, inspired by Urban Architecture. 

Sample from sketchbook, Inspired by Vivienne Westwood

This is a sample from my sketchbook inspired by Vivienne Westwood's dress from her 2007 collection for the Dressed to Kilt show. My theme for my collection was History with a Punk-Rock edge, so this was very appropriate. I decided to embroid the tartan pattern onto black leather using different coloured threads. I then went on to make an entire jacket out of this for my collection.

I've seen millions of faces, ever unchanging

This is collage of faces that I painted for my AS level Graphics coursework. The task was to design a CD cover, and the lyrics "I've seen millions of faces, ever unchanging" inspired me to paint a collage of faces in black and white. I then painted the lyrics onto the top right hand corner of the collage.

Union Jack

This is a photograph of a Textiles piece I created of a Union Jack. To create this, firstly I covered up all the areas that weren't going to be red and then using a screen printing frame and a squeegee I printed the red ink onto the fabric, I then repeated this process for the blue ink. When it had dried I decided that I preferred the other side of the fabric as opposed to the side I had originally printed on as it has more of a punk- rock feel. I then added safety pins to one corner of the Union Jack to add to the puck-rock effect.

Life Drawing

This is an image of one of my life drawings. In this drawing the model is holding a skull of a deer whilst sitting on a stool. I decided to experiment using different colour pastels and chalk as well as charcoal and pencil. 

Urban Fashion Cover

This is a cover of Urban Fashion magazine that I created for my AS Photography coursework. The theme was Urban Fashion, so I did multiple shoots and eventually picked this image for my cover, I then edited it on Adobe Photoshop and added in the text to make it look like a magazine cover. Along with the cover I also created a double page fashion spread for the magazine.

Abused, Portraiture Competition

This is an image shot that I took of my friend Anna. For this photograph I used only Vaseline for make-up to highlight her features, I then played around with lighting to create the effect that made her look all bruised on the face. The subject matter that I wanted to create was that she was an abused woman subject to domestic violence. I entered this photograph for a portraiture competition in which I won the overall photography prize.

Hot Gossip U.K advert, Graphics Exam Final Piece

This is my final piece for my AS Graphics exam, my project was about advertising a new up and coming TV drama called Hot Gossip U.K (essentially the U.K version of American TV drama, Gossip Girl). I wanted to make the whole project quite quirky and colourful in order to attract my target audience of teenage girls. I layered the background with different wallpapers in which I thought would reflect the character of Sarah best. I then painted Sarah using a photograph that I previously took of her. I then made the signs on Adobe Photoshop trying to create a "shabby chic" feel.

A piece inspired by Yves Klein

This is a piece I made for my Graphics personal study project, it is inspired by the artist Yves Klein.To create this I applied my textiles skills of felting to create the moulds onto a board, I then used PVA glue to completely cover the board and then carefully added different shades of blue powder paint onto the piece, then finishing it off with tiny sprinkles of gold and red powder paint.
